The year was 1933. Samuel Blanc created a humorous sewer cleaning machine made of a 1/6 horsepower Maytag washer motor, roller skate wheels, and a 3/8 inch cable that turned the blades. The device used a set of specially-designed blades called “knives” to remove tree roots from sewer lines. There was no digging required. One year later, his wife Lettie named the model the “Roto-Rooter.”
